The book is written by Mthobisi Ndaba, born in KZN, Loskop, eCwaka area, now based in Johannesburg. He attended primary school at Phasiwe Primary in Loskop and then moved to Celimfundo school in Winterton. He holds a B. Social Work (Wits), MA Sociology (Wits), and currently doing a PhD at the Wits Centre for Researching Education and Labour on Higher Education and the public good.

“The title of my latest book is The Jumpstart Effect: Why Human Connections Matter? I started writing it in 2017, inspired by an experience of being stuck on the road when the battery of the car died, and we were helped by a stranger to jumpstart the car”.

"So this is my third book. And one big challenge was figuring out how much of my own journey to share and not knowing whether I am oversharing or not. However, I found comfort in the view that I will never know how people will receive it until I put it out there. I had to take that risk. So far it seems that the personal stories I share in the book are what makes it more relatable to the audience. Also funding was not a challenge because it was published by my own publishing company, Inspiwords Publishers, which I started in 2018 to provide self-publishing authors with professional quality publishing services at an affordable price".

Share with us what the book is the about? “The book is about stuckness as an unfriendly reminder that human connections matter. And the jumpstart effect as the power of relationships to help us get unstuck. It also challenges that success is a product of individual hard work. The book is also a personal reflection, weaving together the Nguni adage Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu, the story of my own journey, and snippets from inspiring stories of others as testimony that human connections matter”.

Is your book available in any bookstores – and people who are not where you at, how can they get it and price? “The book is not available at books stores yet. We are working on it and hopefully it will be before the end of the year. For now, people can order the book through my social media platforms and we will ship the book to them. It is R250 per copy excl. shipping”.

Lastly, the pandemic – what has it taught you? “The pandemic took place at a time I was still working on the book to finalise it. So, because of it, I was even convinced about the idea that human connections matter. What the pandemic did was to force all of us to go into lockdown, which in many ways served as an unfriendly reminder that our contact and connections with other people matter".
