Meet the founder of Mamcube Chickens Ncumisa Mkabile, a 28 year old female farmer based in the Western Cape in Cape Town to be precise. Ncumisa specializes in crop and poultry farming where she sells veg and tasty chicken to the nation. She has a National Diploma in Travel and Tourism Operations, a totally different study background from the current field she currently runs her business and that is mostly the zig-zag journey to success for most entrepreneurs around the country from the past few years.

When did you start with your chicken business and what inspired the thought? “I started my chicken business in March 2020 when I had to close down my catering business due to the pandemic. The catering business was my only source of income so I needed to think of ways for me to generate income again. The closing of my previous business was sad, but now I can proudly say that had pushed me to think on my feet and venture the current booming business I am running now”.

Please share the challenges you have faced when you decided you are fully going to start your chicken business and how did you overcome those? “The challenges that I faced at the beginning was not having enough information/mentor that will guide me through the process, so I had to use the internet to make sure that I gather as much information as I could to make sure that my chicks survive till the end of the cycle. Also not having funds or proper funding was also a main challenge for my business, but I had to use funds from my previous business to get the current of the ground”.

Highlights of your chicken business journey so far? “One of them is the fact that I was able to start my poultry farming business and made means to make sure I brand and package the product in a decent and professional way from the get go, that has attracted clients enough for me. Also, it has been nothing but amazing to have the chicken sold out, all thanks to the support of my community and social media friends, I am looking forward to more highlights coming”.

Where do you see your business in 5 years’ time? “My dream is to be a commercial farmer where I can produce and supply fresh fruit and vegetables, and supply it to businesses and companies all over South Africa while creating job opportunities for the people at the same time”.

How can people buy your chickens – also do you do bulk selling for entrepreneurs and what are your prices per chicken and per bulks? “People can follow me on all social media platforms to buy or contact me. For bulk buyers who buy 10 and more it’s R60 per chicken with delivery at no extra cost”.

Lastly, what advice would you give another young person out there who would to start something? “My advice would be, start small with what you have and gradually grow - don't wait on the government to fund you but give the government something to work with”.
