Sweet moments are always the best to create in our daily living, as they often lead to healthy and valuable memories. Sometimes, those moments come in the simplest of ways, a warm cup of tea, a spoonful of honey, or a breakfast table shared with loved ones. In fact, such simple pleasures have inspired the creation of a sweet, healthy and valuable product that deserves a permanent place in everyone’s grocery basket. That product is the golden goodness behind Southern Gold Honey.

Founded in 2024 by Carel-Louis Steenkamp, Southern Gold Honey is not just another honey brand on the shelf. It is the vision of a young entrepreneur from Durbanville in Cape Town who believes that business should serve both people and the planet.

Steenkamp’s journey into entrepreneurship did not begin in a boardroom or a corporate office. Instead, it was shaped by creativity, curiosity and a deep connection to nature. Before launching Southern Gold Honey, he explored different entrepreneurial paths while also dedicating time to wildlife photography, a passion that brought him closer to the natural world and its delicate balance.

That connection to nature would later influence the direction of his business.

“I wanted to build something meaningful,” Steenkamp explains. “Not just a business, but a brand that could have a tangible, positive impact.”

Over time, honey emerged as the perfect product to build around. It represents the relationship between nature and people, while also supporting one of the planet’s most important creatures - the bee.

For Steenkamp, the motivation to create Southern Gold Honey was not sparked by a single dramatic moment. Rather, it was the growing awareness that many consumers have become disconnected from where their food truly comes from.

“There is a real disconnect between consumers and the origin of their food,” he says. “At the same time, there were concerns around the quality and authenticity of honey in the market. That made it clear that there was space to build something better.”

With that in mind, Southern Gold Honey was built on a clear vision, to create a premium honey brand rooted in quality, transparency and sustainability. The brand focuses on producing raw honey while supporting ethical beekeeping practices and contributing to environmental restoration.

At its heart, Southern Gold Honey aims to create harmony between people and the planet, a philosophy that runs through every jar produced.

But like many young businesses, the road to building this brand has not been without its challenges.

Launching a new product in a competitive market requires patience and persistence. One of the biggest hurdles has been building trust among customers while maintaining strict quality standards. Working with small-scale ethical beekeepers also requires careful coordination to ensure that supply remains consistent without compromising the brand’s principles.

There have also been logistical challenges around production, packaging and distribution, all while trying to keep the product authentic and responsibly sourced.

Another major obstacle has been educating consumers about the difference between raw honey and highly processed honey often found in mass markets.

Despite these challenges, Steenkamp remains committed to the long-term vision.

“We’ve focused on learning constantly, refining our systems and staying true to the values that started the business in the first place,” he said.

Those values are deeply tied to sustainability. For Southern Gold Honey, ethical sourcing and environmental responsibility were never an afterthought, they were the foundation upon which the brand was built.

Bees play an essential role in maintaining ecosystems and supporting global food production. Yet they are increasingly under threat from environmental degradation and unsustainable practices.

By working closely with ethical beekeepers and local farmers, Southern Gold Honey aims to support healthier bee populations while also creating fair and sustainable partnerships with suppliers.

“The goal is to build a system where everyone benefits - the bees, the farmers, the customers and the environment,” Steenkamp explained.

Today, Southern Gold Honey offers a growing range of premium raw honey products, including natural liquid honey and creamed honey. The brand also provides beautifully curated gift boxes, ideal for both personal and corporate gifting.

Even the packaging reflects the company’s sustainability values, using eco-conscious materials wherever possible. Through collaborations with businesses, Southern Gold Honey also offers co-branded gifting solutions that allow companies to share meaningful, locally sourced products with clients and employees.

In times where consumers are increasingly looking for authenticity and purpose in the brands they support, Southern Gold Honey stands as a reminder that sometimes the sweetest ideas are born from nature itself.

And perhaps that is exactly why a jar of honey - pure, natural and thoughtfully sourced, deserves to be a staple in every kitchen.
