From Katlehong to the world.
The Goonz is a duo that consists of Thato Cyprian Mohlakoana, known as Rei Tee Cee and Bafana Khangale known as Tony Shades. Rei Tee Cee was born in North West raised in Alexandra, Tembisa and Katlehong. Tony Shades was born in Natalspruit in Thokoza, and grew up in Katlehong. “The name The Goonz was given to us by the late “Mr Chilli M” known as Udaddy Vukani Masinga because he said our music will cause havoc on the entertainment industry and it kind of sticked with us ever since”.
The duo was established 2018 after coming together with different styles and elements as different rap artists. "Rei Tee Cee is more of an old school generation hip hop artist while Tony Shades represents the new school sound called trap, after combining our sounds that made us bridge the gap between the 80’s and 2000’s music - which makes it easy for the lovers of music to relate to the sound”. Our sound is hip hop, fused with new school trap, R&B and a bit of soulful hip hop gospel. And as artists we aspire ourselves musically but business wise we look up to artist like PRO, HHP, AMU, TUMI, SKWATTA KAMP, FLABBA, and international acts”.

From the day you started would you say you have grown and which performance is your most memorable in your music career as GOONS? “I believe we grow from what we go through, good or bad there’s always a lesson in it. Our most memorable night was performing in Pretoria on an event hosted by Gino at Sunnyside hip hop night, as well as performing at Goodfellaz lifestyle corner in Spruitview. Also performing at Phumuz’aMaphiko opening for big names like the Durban Afrotainment crew that came to visit that day. And seeing our music video playing on trace Africa, Channel O and Mtv base has been a highlight of our music career thus far”.
How did you guys survive lockdown? "It’s been a scary moment for a while but through prayer and looking forward to better days, also working endlessly on our music, and drawing inspiration from what the world was going through assisted us to cope".
