Johannesburg, March 2026 - Transnet SOC Ltd (“Transnet”), through its Shoes on Feet campaign, is donating more than 4000 pairs of school shoes to learners in disadvantaged communities across South Africa, helping to restore dignity and support a better learning environment for young learners.
The donations are the culmination of a campaign led by Transnet Group Chief Executive, Michelle Phillips, which mobilised employees from all Transnet’s operating divisions, as well as private sector partners, to contribute school shoes for learners in need. The Shoes on Feet campaign highlights Transnet’s continued commitment to driving meaningful social change and investing in the well-being of communities across the country.
On Wednesday, Transnet brought the campaign to East London in the Eastern Cape, where 250 pairs of school shoes were distributed to learners at Inyathi Primary School in Gompo Village. The initiative was warmly received by both learners and educators, who expressed appreciation for the donation, which will help foster pride, dignity, and a positive learning environment.
Speaking at the handover ceremony held at Inyathi Primary School, Transnet Group Chief Executive, Michelle Phillips said: “We believe in the power of education as an instrument that can transform lives for the better, and we don’t want to see learners who don’t go to school because they don’t have school shoes. This donation forms part of our broader commitment to ensuring that more learners can attend school every day. Our goal is to expand the reach of this campaign so that more learners can access education without disruption and with the dignity they deserve.”
Since February 2026, similar handover events have taken place in communities across the country, with more than 4000 pairs of school shoes distributed to learners who need them most.
Transnet has also extended its appreciation to corporate partners and stakeholders who supported the campaign, underscoring the importance of collaboration in addressing social challenges and creating sustainable change.
Transnet’s community development agenda is anchored in its commitment to drive sustainable and meaningful change by addressing social challenges in communities. The Shoes on Feet campaign is a powerful example of how collaborative efforts between Transnet, its employees and corporate partners can make a tangible difference in the lives of South African learners.
