Royalty in every stitch: The rise of Freeway By Flawless.

We chat with Edmund Khayelihle Nguse, co-founder of the stunning Freeway By Flawless clothing brand. His early school years were spent at George Cato Primary School and Alexandra High School in Pietermaritzburg. He then attended Midlands Rugby Academy for tertiary studies, where he pursued fashion merchandising, though he didn’t complete the course. In 2020, he enrolled in an online fashion course and also completed a personal training qualification.


When did you start this clothing brand, and what inspired you to go for it? “Freeway By Flawless was founded in 2015. Destiny inspired us. Personally, I always envisioned myself owning a global brand. As the saying goes, love what you do. Nothing is more priceless than waking up to do something you’re passionate about.”


What challenges did you face when trying to get Freeway By Flawless off the ground, and how did you respond to them? “I have always placed myself within the fashion industry, surrounding myself with designers and creative artists, trying to learn from them and understand what they go through. I think my stubbornness played a big role. I positioned myself in environments that allowed me to develop the necessary skills by attending runways and photoshoots. That made it easier to create my own platform. I later connected with a group of creatives, and together we hosted a fashion event called Fashion Cocktail.”



What makes your clothing label stand out from the many others already on the market? “Freeway By Flawless is a classic, traditional style that is both timeless and unique. This is a premium lifestyle brand - a culture of royalty. Simplicity is our signature, and our slogan says it best: ‘Unique is Bold’.”


How has the brand been received so far, and what keeps you motivated to keep pushing Freeway By Flawless forward? “The first five years have been amazing for the brand. Although we’ve experienced ups and downs, we’ve learned a lot about what it takes to become a major player in the fashion industry. The brand continues to grow, and our team’s motivation is to keep Freeway By Flawless strong. Our mission is to build a label that will be a source of pride and joy, loved by future generations. We admire the other local brands that have emerged from South Africa, and we’re determined to be part of that great story.”
