Born and raised in the dusty streets of New Brighton in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape. Kwanele Masumpa also known as Kwan on stage is one of the lowkey yet impactful rappers in the NMB music scene. The young man is one of those talents that’s beautiful to observe and watch as it jets off to greater heights - slowly but surely. When we asked him about his personal learnings in the game thus far this is what he said, “The music industry has proved to be more about business and profit than talent and I’ve been collecting all the necessary information so as to thrive in it”.

When did you start doing music, and how has your music impacted your fans over the years? “I started doing music at the age of 9 but I got into it full time only in 2019. I’ve released my first single in 2017 while I was still in varsity and I went on to release my first EP in 2020, which was received well by the streets and had a few talking. I realized my music has some kind of impact when I’ve been told it is very much inspiring and relatable. For me to notice the impact it’s when I’ve seen a massive growth in numbers over the years since the launch of my brand in 2017 – and that alone impacts how I continue too”.

How has the pandemic affected your music, and how did you keep sane during these lockdowns levels as an artist? “As much as the lockdown has affected the world in a significant negative way, it somehow has allowed me to focus more on my music and grow as an artist with all the time I had to myself. I did a lot of writing and well my EP was released during these challenging times. So yes I was affected negatively by not being able to be out there for gigs but the high’s were there too”.

Your last released EP – tell us about it, how was it received by your fans, who had you worked with, also share about your next upcoming project and when is it dropped? “The Grownup Vol. 1 EP was released July 1st, 2020. It’s a project I felt like I owed it to myself and my fans after having being quiet for almost 2years. On it there was quiet a number of people who were involved; The brainstorming and discussion of ideas are what made the writing process much easier and I’m grateful to all my friends and family for playing such an important role. About my next upcoming project, I’d rather do less promising and just deliver, lol, but I assure you I’m about to be on everyone’s TV and mobile screens”.

Your favorite highlight this far in your music career? “There’s more than one, but to always hear people telling me how my music has helped them get through the hardest of times takes the cup. That is priceless”.

Lastly, when you are not doing music – what do you normally get up to? “I’m a creative director at a newly found graphics and photography company, SIX BLX. That takes a lot of my time”, he sighed.
